Welcome to Through the Glass, the official blog of Carlin Aquarium Systems.
We like to say of our clients’ tanks, “these are not your little brother’s aquariums.” In a nutshell, that means that the tanks we tend are not the ten-gallon aquarium on the bedside stand with a plastic scuba diver and two tetras hovering in the corner. Most people do not need our expertise to handle those.
My son Ben and I started out like that when he was a teenager. Our father-son hobby grew into a job for Ben at a local pet store and eventually we bought and ran Ultimate Aquariums, a saltwater specialty retail store and maintenance business serving the Roanoke and New River Valleys.
Earlier this year (2012), we sold the retail side to our friend and then-employee Justin Melki, while keeping the maintenance side of the business. (We encourage you to check out Justin’s excellent service and selection.)
Our plan now is to continue to install and maintain quality aquariums for Roanoke area homes and businesses, as well as the 5,000 gallon reef, jellyfish display and mangrove/seahorse exhibit at Center in the Square. We obviously have the background to handle saltwater aquaria, but we also do freshwater tanks from planted Amazon biotopes to African Cichlids to GloFish.
Here, in the Through the Glass, blog we will talk about the interesting designs and builds that come our way. It may not be TV’s “Tanked,” but if you like fish, we think you’ll be interested in Roanoke’s own fish stories.
